Obtaining a driver's license in Turkey is not difficult. Foreigners are both allowed to convert their existing driver's license from their home country or to obtain a new Turkish driver's license themselves. In this article, we aim to guide you through the steps to obtaining a valid driver's license in Turkey for foreigners.



Foreign residents in Turkey can drive a motor vehicle if they hold a valid driver's license obtained from their home country for a maximum of 6 months period. Once this 6 month period ends, the person is required to convert their existing driver's license to a Turkish driver's license. Once the driver's license is changed to a Turkish driver's license, their previous original license from their home country is given up. If one wouldn't want to give up on their original driver's license, it is allowed for foreigners in Turkey to apply for driver's license as well. Converting existing driver's license to a Turkish driver's license



  • Applying to convert an existing driver's license that is taken from foreigner's home country to a Turkish driver's license can be made to any traffic registration bureau.
  • Applicants are required to be minimum age of 18, holding at least primary school diploma, clear criminal record and to meet the health requirements.
  • Passport or ID with photo
  • Health report
  • Receipt of the paid fee
  • 1 photograph (biometric)
  • Original international driver's license and photocopy of the international driver's license in colour
  • Notarized translation of the international driver's license and diploma or proof of education
  • Criminal record statement
  • Blood type statement



  • Obtaining a new Turkish driver's license



    Going for a new Turkish driver's license instead of converting your original driver's license allows you not to give up on your local driver's license and helps you hold two driver's license at the same time. In order to be eligible to apply for a Turkish residence permit, one would need to have resided in Turkey for a minimum of 6 months period with a valid residence or student permit.

    Applying for a new Turkish driver's license begins with getting in touch with a driving school where Turkish is not the only option - applicants can take the classes and exams alternatively in English or Arabic too.
